Kayaking

World-class whitewater and coastal paddling year-round

Costa Rica's combination of steep volcanic terrain, heavy rainfall, and warm water makes it one of the best kayaking destinations in the Americas. The Pacuare River on the Caribbean slope is the standout -- Class III-IV rapids through a gorge of primary rainforest, regularly rated among the top ten whitewater runs in the world. Most outfitters run it as a day trip from Turrialba or a two-day trip with an overnight jungle camp.

The Reventazon and Sarapiqui rivers offer good alternatives at various difficulty levels. For beginners, the lower Corobici near Canas is a gentle float through dry tropical forest where you are more likely to spot monkeys and iguanas than rapids.

Ocean kayaking is equally rewarding. The mangrove channels around Damas Island near Manuel Antonio are ideal for a half-day paddle, and the coastline of the Osa Peninsula offers more adventurous open-water routes with chances to see dolphins and sea turtles. Several operators in Uvita and Drake Bay run guided tours.
