Just past Playa Bonita on the way to Moín lies Playa Portete — a small protected cove backed by coconut palms and the only beach near Limón where you can swim without much worry about the surf. The reef and the curve of the headland together knock the energy out of the waves, and a couple of seafood sodas along the access road serve fried fish and patacones to anyone who has come for the afternoon.
It is too small to be a destination from anywhere but Limón itself, but combined with Playa Bonita it makes a satisfying half-day from the city. A boat ramp at the eastern end is used by fishermen and the occasional charter heading out for offshore tarpon.
