Turrialba Volcano

Active stratovolcano with crater rim hikes when open

An active stratovolcano northeast of town, intermittently emitting ash since 2010. When the park is open, hiking to the crater rim offers views into the active vent and across the Central Valley. Access is via a rough road from Santa Cruz de Turrialba; a 4WD is useful though not always required. Check the status with SINAC (Costa Rica's national parks service) before making the trip — closures can happen with little notice.
