Turrialba sits at around 600 m elevation and has a wetter climate than San José. The dry season (December to April) is the most reliable for rafting and volcano visits, with clearer skies and lower river levels that expose more rapids. The wet season brings higher water on the Pacuare — flows can be spectacular but some runs may be closed. The Turrialba Volcano is periodically closed due to ash activity regardless of season; check with the national parks service before visiting.
