Located near Matanzas, about 40 km west of Varadero, the Bellamar Caves are one of the worthwhile excursions from the resort zone. Cuba's deepest accessible cave system, the entrance takes you down 159 steps to the main chambers, which contain stalactites, stalagmites, and underground water. Some chambers are still being explored. Watch your step and your head — the ceilings get low in places.
