San Andres Archaeological Park

Maya archaeological park between Santa Ana and San Salvador, with pyramidal platforms and a small museum.

San Andres Archaeological Park preserves the remains of an important Maya settlement in the Zapotitan Valley, close to the volcanic landscape around Santa Ana. The site is smaller and less dramatic than Tazumal, but its broad platforms, plazas, and interpretive museum give a useful picture of pre-Hispanic life in western El Salvador.

The park works well as part of a day that also includes Joya de Ceren or the Santa Ana area. Shade is limited around the ruins, so mornings are more comfortable. The site is easy to understand without a specialist guide, though the museum context helps explain how the settlement connected to trade, agriculture, and political life in the valley.
