Santa Ana sits among some of El Salvador's finest natural and cultural day trips, most within an hour by car or bus.
Lake Coatepeque, a stunning blue crater lake about 25 km south, is the easiest escape — good for a swim and a lakeside fish lunch. The Ruta de las Flores, the country's most popular tourist circuit, threads through coffee towns west of the city and is best on a weekend for its food festivals and craft markets.
For more active outings, the hike to the crater rim of the Santa Ana Volcano (Ilamatepec) from the Cerro Verde visitor centre is the most dramatic in the country, with the stark cone of Izalco Volcano visible across the park. West of the city, the Tazumal ruins at Chalchuapa are the best-preserved pre-Columbian site in El Salvador.
