Disko Bay Boat Trips

From June through September, daily boat trips run from Ilulissat harbor out into Disko Bay among the icebergs. The experience of drifting past icebergs the size of city blocks — blue-white and groaning with the stress of their own weight — is one that simply cannot be replicated anywhere else accessible to ordinary travelers.

Several operators run three to four hour trips, and whale watching is a standard component from July onward. Bring waterproofs regardless of the weather — the spray off the water is cold even in midsummer — and layers. The harbor is right in town; operators set up near the dock.

A story
The bay is prime humpback whale feeding ground from June through September. Humpbacks come to feed on the capelin that gather near the icefjord mouth, and sightings are common enough that operators often guarantee a whale encounter or offer a free return trip. The icebergs in the bay are also a major draw — some rise 50 meters above the water, with another 200 meters below the surface.
