Icefjord Centre

The Icefjord Centre opened in 2021 and quickly became one of the most striking pieces of architecture in the Arctic. Designed to follow the contours of the hillside above the fjord, the sinuous wooden building contains an excellent interpretive exhibition on the Ilulissat Icefjord — its geology, its ecosystem, the ancient Inuit settlement of Sermermiut that sits just below, and the contemporary science of glaciology and climate change.

The building itself is reason enough to visit. The viewing platform at the far end frames the icefjord in a way that feels almost cinematic. Allow an hour for the exhibition and another hour to walk down to Sermermiut from the grounds.

A story
The Icefjord Centre was designed by Danish firm Dorte Mandrup and opened in 2021. Its distinctive curved wooden form is built to emerge from the hillside like a natural geological feature — the idea being that the architecture should frame the fjord rather than compete with it. It immediately won international architecture awards and brought a new wave of visitors to Ilulissat, prompting Air Greenland to expand its routes.
