Dog Sledding

From November through April, when the sea ice is solid enough, dog sledding is Ilulissat's premier winter activity. The tours run across the frozen bay and out toward the icefjord, offering views of the frozen landscape that are impossible to reach any other way in winter. The combination of silence, speed, and extraordinary scenery makes this one of the more memorable ways to travel anywhere.

Multiple operators in town offer half-day and full-day trips. Book in advance during peak winter season, particularly around Christmas and February when the northern lights are frequently visible. Temperatures can reach minus 30°C; dress accordingly, though operators typically provide appropriate outer layers.

A story
Ilulissat has one of the highest concentrations of sled dogs in the world — roughly 3,000 dogs for a town of 4,500 people. Under Greenlandic law, only traditional Greenlandic dogs may be kept north of the Arctic Circle, preserving the breed that has been used for transport here for over a thousand years. The dogs live outside year-round, chained in groups, and the sound of several thousand sled dogs howling in unison at feeding time is an experience visitors don't forget.
