Bars and Cafes

There is no bar scene on La Désirade in any conventional sense. A few small bars operate in Grande-Anse and the other villages, serving ti-punch (white rum, cane syrup, and a squeeze of lime), local beers — Lorraine and Corsaire are the staples — and cold soft drinks. These are neighbourhood places, not tourist bars: the clientele is mostly people who live here, the furniture is plastic, and the atmosphere is entirely unperformed. The beach, frankly, is the bar. Bring your own rum punch, find a patch of shade, and watch the sea.

In the evenings the village bars come into their own as the social hub of the island. Things start and end early. This is not a place for late nights.
