Grand-Bourg Market

The covered market in Grand-Bourg is the social and commercial heart of the island. Saturday mornings are the busiest — fishermen bring in fresh catch, farmers arrive from the interior with vegetables, fruits, and roots unfamiliar to mainland French visitors (breadfruit, christophine, ti-nain bananas). Prepared Creole food — accras, boudins, stuffed crab — appears in the morning and sells out by midday. The market is also one of the best places to buy local rum at producer prices and pick up bottles of homemade cane syrup for making ti' punch at home.
