Marie-Galante rewards slow exploration. The rum distilleries are a highlight in their own right — each one different — and the windmill ruins scattered across the cane fields give the interior an unexpectedly evocative quality. The island is small enough to circuit by car or scooter in a day, but the beaches and the distilleries each deserve unhurried time.
