Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Dress

Address 6a Calle Final, Zona 10, Universidad Francisco Marroquín, Guatemala City

The Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Dress, on the campus of Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Zona 10, documents the extraordinary textile tradition of Guatemala's Maya communities. The collection covers hundreds of huipiles (woven blouses), cortes (wrapped skirts), ceremonial textiles, and woven items from communities across the country, arranged to show how each town or village has its own distinctive patterns, colours, and weaving techniques.

Guatemala has one of the world's most diverse and alive textile traditions — Maya women still weave on backstrap looms in their homes, wearing clothing that immediately identifies their community of origin. The Ixchel collection provides the context to understand and appreciate what you will see in markets and streets throughout the country. The museum shares its campus with the Popol Vuh Museum; both can be visited in a single trip to Zona 10.
