Most travellers give Guatemala City a single day before heading on to Antigua or the highlands, and that is about right. The essential stops are the National Palace and Cathedral on Plaza de la Constitución in Zona 1, the bustling Mercado Central directly underneath the cathedral, and then a taxi south to the two best museums in the country: the Popol Vuh Museum (private collection of Maya ceramics) and the Ixchel Museum of Indigenous Dress, both on the campus of Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Zona 10. If you have time, the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology in Zona 13 — near the airport — has the best state collection of Maya stelae and jade. The pre-classic Maya site of Kaminaljuyú on the western edge of the city is archaeologically important but has been largely swallowed by urban sprawl and will only interest specialists.
