The three main Garífuna festivals bring Livingston to life in a way that rewards a planned visit. Garífuna Settlement Day on November 19 celebrates the 1802 landing of Garífuna settlers on the Honduran coast, with boat re-enactments, punta dancing, and all-night music. The December 12 feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe and New Year celebrations are similarly vibrant.
Outside of festival periods, Livingston's pace is slow and the town is small enough to see in a day or two. If you're specifically coming for the culture, arrive a day early to get oriented and leave a day after the main events — the dancing and music often continue into the nights following the official celebration.
