The white twin-towered cathedral on Place Toussaint Louverture is the centrepiece of Jacmel's main square. Built in the late nineteenth century in a restrained neoclassical style, it is more substantial than most of the town's churches and serves as the seat of the Catholic diocese of Jacmel.
The 2010 earthquake damaged the structure, and parts of it have been under repair ever since. The plaza in front is a good place to sit in the early evening and watch the town's social life — the cathedral's bells, schoolchildren in uniform, vendors selling fritay from charcoal braziers.
