Papier-Mâché Workshops

The back streets of the historic centre are lined with the workshops of Jacmel's papier-mâché artisans, whose carved and painted masks of leopards, demons, devils, and tropical fish are the town's most distinctive craft. Most workshops welcome visitors and will show you how the figures are built up over a clay or wood form, then dried, painted, and varnished.

Prices are reasonable and you can commission custom pieces if you have a few days to wait. Many of the workshops cluster on Rue Sainte-Anne and the streets running down toward the waterfront. The Centre d'Art is a good starting point for anyone who wants an overview before buying.

A story
Jacmel's papier-mâché tradition feeds the carnival every February, and the giant animal-headed costumes you see in the parade are built by hand in these workshops over weeks of work. Many of the artisans are second- and third-generation; the technique has been refined since the early 1900s.
