Casa Valle

Casa Valle is the colonial-era home of José Cecilio del Valle, one of the founding fathers of Central American independence and Choluteca's most famous historical son. The house has been preserved as a museum and cultural centre, giving a sense of colonial domestic life in southern Honduras during the late 18th century.

Del Valle was a lawyer, journalist, and philosopher who wrote the draft declaration of Central American independence from Spain in 1821. The museum contains period furniture and documents relating to his life and to the independence movement. For travellers interested in Central American history, it provides context that the wider region rarely explains well. Entry is free or very inexpensive.

A story
José Cecilio del Valle was born in Choluteca in 1777 and became one of the principal authors of the Central American Declaration of Independence in 1821. He was twice elected president of the new federation but died before taking office either time — a figure of considerable intellectual accomplishment whose political ambitions were consistently frustrated by circumstance.
