Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

The Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception anchors Choluteca's Parque Central and is the town's most significant colonial building. Construction began in 1785 and continued for over a century, finally completing in 1918. The result is an elegant church with a white facade, tall towers, and an interior that repays a visit: the hand-carved mahogany altar is the finest piece of craftsmanship in the city, and the wooden ceiling beams are original colonial construction.

The Parque Central in front of the cathedral is the social hub of Choluteca, busy from morning to night with vendors, schoolchildren, and older residents who've been watching the same square for decades. Sit on one of the benches in the shade of the trees and you'll see most of Choluteca pass by within an hour.

A story
The cathedral was built over a period of more than a century, from 1785 to 1918. Its construction outlasted the Spanish colonial period, independence, and several changes of government — the building's style reflects this layered history, blending late colonial and early republican elements in a way no single architect could have planned.
