Caxa Real is one of Comayagua's useful pieces of colonial architecture: a former royal treasury where taxes and mineral revenues from the old province of Honduras were gathered for the Spanish crown. Built in the 18th century, damaged by earthquakes, and later restored, it gives the historic centre another layer beyond the cathedral and churches.
The building is not huge, but its story is good. It speaks to Comayagua's administrative importance under Spanish rule and to the slow recovery of the city's colonial fabric in the 21st century. Work it into a walk around the central plaza rather than making a special trip across town.
