Punta Izopo National Park

Punta Izopo, on the eastern side of the Bay of Tela, is the smaller and quieter twin to Punta Sal. Its core attraction is the mangrove labyrinth of the Lean and Hicaque rivers, best explored by kayak from the Garifuna village of Triunfo de la Cruz.

You drift between sun-dappled mangrove tunnels, looking up for white-faced capuchin monkeys, toucans, herons and the occasional iguana on a branch. The headland beach at the end is wild and good for a swim. Half-day kayak tours are inexpensive and run from Tela hotels or directly from Triunfo.
