Beach Champas

The row of palm-shaded restaurants along the main beach

The strip of champas — palm-thatched open-fronted shacks — directly below the central plaza is where most of Trujillo eats lunch. There are around a dozen of them in a row, all serving similar menus: grilled snapper or kingfish, fried fish with tajadas, ceviche, conch soup, shrimp in garlic, baleadas for breakfast. None of them are bookable; turn up and pick whichever has space.

Standouts change over time, but Mama Yola and Rincón de los Amigos have both been operating for years and have settled into reliable form. Prices are very low by international standards; cash only. Open from late morning through to sunset.
