When to Go

The Caribbean coast of Honduras has a pronounced wet/dry split. February to May is the driest period and the easiest for travel — sunny days, calm sea, the road from La Ceiba mostly passable. April and May are also pleasantly warm without yet being oppressive.

June to October is the wet season, with afternoon downpours and the occasional tropical storm or hurricane (the Caribbean coast is exposed). Roads, especially east of La Ceiba, deteriorate sharply; some bridges wash out. Plan extra time and check conditions before travelling.

November to January is unpredictable — usually drier than the worst of the rainy season but cooler, with the so-called norte winds bringing several days of grey skies and rough sea. Hotel prices are at their lowest. The Garifuna village celebrations around Easter (Semana Santa) are worth timing a visit around.
