Trujillo is genuinely remote — by far the longest journey of any town on the Honduran Caribbean coast. The road from San Pedro Sula takes about six to seven hours by bus, passing through Tela and La Ceiba on a paved but slow highway that becomes worse east of La Ceiba. Direct buses from San Pedro Sula and from La Ceiba run several times a day; Cotraibal and Cotraipbal are the main companies.
By air. Trujillo's small airport (TJI) saw scheduled flights in the past but currently has only occasional charter and military traffic. The nearest reliable airport is La Ceiba (LCE), three to four hours west by bus.
Onward. From Trujillo, slow chicken buses continue east along the coast toward the Mosquitia, but the road quality drops sharply. The Mosquitia itself is essentially only reachable from here by boat or small plane.
