Things to Do

Trujillo's pleasures are simple and low-key: the old Spanish fort overlooking the bay, the beach that runs for kilometres east and west of town, a small cluster of historic buildings around the plaza, and the cloud-forest reserve in the hills above. A day or two covers it; the joy is in the unhurried atmosphere rather than any specific monument.

The Garifuna village of Santa Fe to the west, the cloud forest of the Capiro–Calentura National Park in the hills, and walks along the empty stretches of beach east toward the Mosquitia are what most visitors remember. Eating fresh fish on the sand at sunset is the standard evening.
