Fern Gully is a two-kilometre stretch of road that runs through a narrow limestone gorge between Ocho Rios and the interior, canopied by over a hundred species of fern. The result is a cathedral of green — dappled light, constant moisture, and the sounds of the forest pressing in from both sides. It's one of the most striking short drives in Jamaica.
The road is one-way heading south, and it functions mainly as a transit route for vehicles leaving Ocho Rios. You can walk it, but the traffic makes this inadvisable. The best approach is to drive or take a taxi slowly, stopping where the gully widens to step out and look up into the canopy. Roadside vendors line parts of the route; some sell good carved woodwork. The whole experience takes about 20 minutes.
