Isla La Roqueta

Small island with beaches, snorkelling, and an underwater Virgin statue

Isla La Roqueta sits just across a narrow channel from Playa Caleta in old Acapulco, a ten-minute ride by glass-bottom boat. The island has a handful of beaches, a small lighthouse, and a zoo with animals native to the Guerrero coast. The snorkelling off the rocks is reasonable — parrotfish and sergeant majors are common — and the glass-bottom boats give non-swimmers a view of the reef below.

The underwater Virgin of Guadalupe is the main draw for divers. The statue stands in about eight metres of water and is clearly visible from the glass-bottom boats on calm days. After time on the island, most visitors take the boat back to Caleta and spend the rest of the afternoon at the beach clubs there.

A story
Submerged just off the island's eastern shore is a bronze statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe, placed there in 1958. Divers swim down to touch her hand for good luck, and local fishermen believe she protects them on the open Pacific.
