Dos Ojos Cenote

Twin sinkhole cenote with some of the clearest cave-diving water in the Yucatán

Dos Ojos sits about 15 minutes south of Akumal, off the road to Tulum. The two open sinkholes — the eyes — are connected by an underwater passage, and both are open to snorkelers as well as certified cave divers. The water is fresh, cold, and so clear that the limestone formations on the bottom look close enough to touch.

Snorkelers can swim a short loop through the cavern with masks and headlamps; certified cave divers can go much further. There is a parking fee and a separate snorkel/dive fee — bring cash. Pack a wetsuit if you have one; the water hovers around 25 degrees Celsius and gets cold quickly.

A story
Dos Ojos — the two eyes — is part of one of the largest underwater cave systems on the planet. Cave divers have mapped more than 80 kilometres of passages here, and the system connects to other cenotes for kilometres in every direction. The water is rainfall that has filtered through limestone for decades; visibility is often over 100 metres.
