The malecón runs along the lagoon side of town, facing the calm, mangrove-fringed water of the Laguna de Barra de Navidad. It is the social heart of the town — lined with palms and simple benches, and busy in the evenings when families stroll and fishermen return with the day's catch.
The view from the malecón across the lagoon to the low mangrove islands is one of the quieter pleasures of the Mexican Pacific coast. At dusk the water turns gold, pelicans cruise past at eye level, and the pace slows noticeably. Small pangas (motorised skiffs) shuttle back and forth between the malecón and Isla Navidad, where the Grand Bay Hotel sits amid a golf course and marina — a contrast so sharp it feels like two different countries sharing the same lagoon.
