Pez Marlin Statue

A large marlin sculpture stands near the waterfront in the centre of town, one of those cheerful pieces of public art that Mexican fishing villages like to erect in honour of their most prized catch. The blue marlin is the prestige fish of this stretch of coast, and sport fishing for them is one of the activities local boat operators offer.

The statue makes a handy orientation landmark: the beach is on one side, the lagoon on the other. It is usually surrounded by a small cluster of vendors and the inevitable stray dogs of the Mexican Pacific. Nothing special in itself, but a good symbol of what drives the local economy.
