Church of Santa María Tonantzintla

Overwhelming folk-Baroque church where Indigenous motifs crowd every surface of the interior.

Santa María Tonantzintla, south of Cholula, has one of the most astonishing church interiors in central Mexico. The outside is relatively restrained; inside, plasterwork, colour, saints, angels, fruits, and Indigenous motifs crowd almost every visible surface.

It is a short taxi ride from Cholula and pairs well with San Francisco Acatepec if you have extra time. Photography rules can be strict, so go to look rather than to collect images.

A story
Tonantzintla's interior is often described as Indigenous Baroque, but the phrase only hints at the effect. Angels, fruits, flowers, masks, and local imagery cover the space so densely that the church feels carved from colour rather than decorated.
