Museo de los Yaquis

A small museum dedicated to the culture and history of the Yaqui people, who have inhabited the Río Yaqui valley for centuries and maintain a distinct identity, language, and territory to this day. The Yaquis fought the longest indigenous resistance against the Mexican government — a series of wars stretching from the 1820s through to 1927 — and their story is told here with more candour than you'll find at most Mexican regional museums.

The collection includes traditional clothing, tools, religious objects, and historical photographs. The famous Yaqui Deer Dance — a ceremonial performance representing the relationship between humanity and the natural world — is documented in depth. It's a small space but an honest one, and a reminder that the valley's history goes far deeper than the agricultural boom of the 20th century.
