Nainari Lagoon

A large artificial lake on the western edge of the city, ringed by a public park with jogging paths, picnic areas, and a small amusement section. The lagoon is the main recreational green space in the city and gets lively at weekends, with families, cyclists, and vendors. Pelicans and herons frequent the shallower edges.

It's not a destination in itself, but if you're spending a day or night in Obregón — and especially if it's hot, which it almost certainly is — the lakeside is a pleasant place to walk in the early morning or at sunset. The western light over the Sierra Madre catches the water well.

A story
The lagoon is named after the Yaqui word for a type of local fish. It was created as a reservoir in the 1950s when the Yaqui River was dammed to irrigate the agricultural valley, transforming the landscape around Ciudad Obregón. The park around it has become the city's main public lung and weekend gathering place.
