La India Bonita

La India Bonita is one of the most storied restaurants in Cuernavaca, operating since 1927 from a colonial-era house in the historic centre. The setting — a series of rooms around a shaded courtyard with a fountain — is what most people come for first, but the food is genuinely good. The menu is devoted to traditional Mexican cooking, particularly dishes from Morelos: cecina de Yecapixtla, mole negro, and the sopa de lima that has been on the menu in some form since the beginning.

The restaurant has a famous backstory: Dwight Morrow, the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico who commissioned Diego Rivera's murals at the Palacio de Cortés, was a regular, and when President Calvin Coolidge visited Cuernavaca in 1927, this is where he ate. The connection is now a selling point, but the place earns its reputation independently.
