Hussong's Cantina

Founded in 1892 by Johann Hussong, a German immigrant who came south from San Francisco during the Baja gold rush, Hussong's Cantina is the oldest and most famous bar in Baja California. The interior has barely changed: sawdust on the floor, mariachis playing for tips, beer-sign neon, and walls papered with photographs and memorabilia going back generations.

It is a genuine working-class cantina that happens to be a tourist institution. Locals and visitors mix without too much friction, especially on weekday afternoons before the cruise ship crowds arrive. The margaritas are good; the beer is cold; the atmosphere is irreplaceable. At Avenida Ruiz 113, a block from the Malecon.

A story
Hussong's claims to be the birthplace of the margarita. The story goes that in 1941, bartender Don Carlos Orozco poured tequila, triple sec, and lime juice over ice and named the drink after a customer, Margarita Henkel, daughter of the German ambassador. The claim is disputed by at least three other establishments, but Hussong's tells it best and nobody there is going to argue with you about it.
