The Mercado Negro is Ensenada's main wholesale fish market, and unlike many such places it welcomes anyone who shows up. The market runs from early morning, with fishing boats unloading directly at the docks and vendors setting up tables of whatever came in that night — yellowtail, halibut, sea bass, lobster from the Pacific coast, clams, and oysters.
The small eateries around the market serve some of the freshest seafood in Baja at very low prices. Order a plate of aguachile, a bowl of clam soup, or grilled fish with tortillas. The crowd is local fishermen, buyers, and in-the-know visitors. Go before 10am for the best selection and the most activity.
