Bosque y Zoológico de la Ciudad

Shaded park complex with the city zoo and an interactive science museum

The Bosque de la Ciudad is the largest green space in Mexicali — a leafy, well-irrigated park complex on the southern edge of downtown, with a small zoo, a botanical garden, a fishing lake, and several pavilions for events. The zoo focuses on regional species — desert big-horn sheep, sea lions, jaguars, eagles — and is more research-oriented than spectacle.

The complex also includes Sol del Niño, an interactive science museum aimed at children that occupies a converted cotton mill on the park's edge. It is one of the better family stops in the city. Best visited in the cooler months between November and March; summer afternoons are punishing even in the shade.
