The Plaza de los Tres Poderes is Mexicali's civic centre — a long open plaza fronting the buildings of Baja California's executive, legislative, and judicial branches. The architecture is austere mid-century modernist with concrete plazas, fountains, and large open paving. It is not pretty in a postcard sense, but it gives a sense of Mexicali's role as a state capital that resists being just a border town.
The plaza is liveliest at weekends and during civic celebrations, when families come to walk and street vendors set up. The state Museo Sol del Niño children's science museum and the modern central library are within easy walking distance.
