The Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is Mexicali's main cathedral, sitting on the Plaza Bicentenario in the centre of the old downtown. The current building dates to the early twentieth century, after the city outgrew its original parish chapel; the white-and-cream façade is more workmanlike than ornate, but the bell towers and interior nave are properly impressive when filled with congregation on Sunday mornings.
The plaza in front is a pleasant breather from the surrounding city — palm trees, benches, an evening paseo that draws families. The whole district is a few minutes' walk from the border crossing, and the cathedral is a useful navigational anchor when exploring downtown on foot.
