The historic centre of Oaxaca is compact and best explored on foot. Most of the main sights — Santo Domingo, the zócalo, the markets, the ethnobotanical garden, the Rufino Tamayo museum — are within 20 minutes' walk of each other. For the outlying sites in the valley, colectivos (shared minivans) leave from the second-class bus terminal on Calle Trujano and from various points around the Abastos market; they are cheap and run frequently. The Tule tree, Mitla, and Teotitlán del Valle are all reachable by colectivo; Hierve el Agua requires two colectivos. For Monte Albán, minibuses run from the Hostal Santa Cruz terminal on Mina Street, departing hourly in the morning. Taxis within the city are metered and inexpensive.
