Querétaro Cathedral

The Cathedral of Querétaro (officially the Cathedral of San Felipe Neri) stands at the corner of the Plaza de Armas and dominates the skyline of the historic centre with its two baroque towers. Construction began in 1786 on the site of an older Oratorian church, and the building was completed in the early 19th century. The interior is relatively austere compared to some Mexican baroque churches, with a clean neoclassical treatment of the nave, but the twin towers are one of the defining elements of Querétaro's urban silhouette.

The cathedral faces the Plaza de Armas directly, and its steps are a popular gathering place for locals in the early evening. Masses are held daily and the church is open to visitors throughout the day. Worth stepping inside for the cool, the quiet, and the good proportions of the interior.
