Getting There

San Blas is reached by road. There is no airport and no rail service. The nearest large city is Tepic, capital of Nayarit state, about 75 km to the east; the drive on Highway 11 takes around 90 minutes through winding mountain roads. From Puerto Vallarta the drive is about 170 km and takes two and a half to three hours.

Buses run from Tepic to San Blas several times daily with Transportes Norte de Sonora and other companies; the journey takes about two hours. From Puerto Vallarta, the easiest route is to take a bus to Tepic and change. Direct tourist shuttles from Puerto Vallarta operate during the high season.

Driving is straightforward: Highway 11 from Tepic descends from the mountains through dry tropical forest before reaching the coast and the town. The road is well surfaced but narrow in places and the last section into town crosses a causeway over the estuary.
