The portales — the covered arcades running along the sides of the Plaza de Armas — are Veracruz's social hub, lined with cafes and restaurants whose tables spill into the square. Son jarocho musicians play here most evenings, and the atmosphere after dark, with couples dancing and vendors moving through the crowd, is one of the more enjoyable in Mexico.
