Eating Out

Veracruz has some of the best seafood in Mexico. The local specialty is huachinango a la veracruzana — red snapper cooked in a tomato sauce with olives, capers, and chiles — a dish that tastes distinctly of this coast. Mariscos restaurants along the waterfront also serve crab soup, raw oysters, fish tacos, and the excellent local shrimp. The portales around the plaza offer a more casual option for lunch, with tamales and antojitos available throughout the day.
