Eating Out

Tabasco cuisine is distinct from the rest of Mexico and not well known outside the region. It relies heavily on river fish, pork, plantains, and chilli — particularly the chile amashito, a tiny but fierce round pepper unique to Tabasco. The classic local dish is pejelagarto, a prehistoric-looking fish (the garfish) that is grilled whole and eaten with tortillas and salsa; you'll find it in restaurants along the riverfront. Chocolate, indigenous to this region, features in mole and in drinks.
