Villahermosa Cathedral

The Cathedral of the Lord (Catedral del Señor) stands at the edge of the Zona Luz and is the principal Catholic church of Villahermosa. Its current form is relatively modest — the building has been rebuilt and restored several times following damage from flooding and earthquake — but it serves as a landmark and gathering point for the city's Catholic community.

The interior is cool and ornate, a welcome escape from the heat outside. Masses are held throughout the day; Sunday morning is busiest, when the square in front fills with worshippers and vendors selling religious items.

A story
The cathedral has been rebuilt twice after flooding. Villahermosa sits at the confluence of two major rivers and has suffered repeated inundations throughout its history — the 2007 flood, which submerged 80 percent of the state of Tabasco, was the worst in living memory, leaving much of the city under several metres of water for weeks. The cathedral, being on slightly higher ground, survived, but the memory of that flood shapes the city's relationship with its landscape.
