Las Coloradas

Las Coloradas — 'the pink ones' — is a small saltworks operation about 20 kilometres east of Rio Lagartos where the shallow tidal pans have turned an extraordinary shade of pink. The colour ranges from pale blush to vivid magenta depending on the season, the weather, and the time of day, and the visual effect against the surrounding white salt and flat blue sky is genuinely striking.

The site is run as a private saltworks and visitors view it from the roadside or a small walkway along the perimeter. It is easily combined with a boat tour from Rio Lagartos — most operators will arrange transport or point you toward local taxi drivers. Go in the afternoon when the light is at its most intense, and avoid midday when the colour tends to wash out in the direct sun.

A story
The pink colour of Las Coloradas is produced by a high concentration of halobacteria and brine shrimp in the saturated salt water. The same organisms that give flamingos their pink colour are responsible for the lagoon's extraordinary hue — and the shade shifts through the day from pale rose in morning to deep magenta in afternoon light.
