Landhuis Chobolobo

Landhuis Chobolobo is the home of the Senior family distillery, where the original Blue Curaçao liqueur has been made since 1896. The landhuis — one of the old plantation houses that dot the island — has been in the Senior family for generations. Free tours take you through the production process: the laraha peel, the copper pot stills, the ageing barrels, and the bottling line.

The tasting room at the end offers the full range of Senior liqueurs, including the classic Blue Curaçao in several flavours, as well as rum and other island spirits. It is possible to taste seven or eight products, which makes for a relaxed and unpretentious end to the tour. The setting in the old landhuis courtyard is pleasant.

A story
The recipe for Blue Curaçao liqueur uses the dried peel of the laraha citrus — a bitter, inedible fruit that evolved from Spanish Valencia oranges brought to the island in the 1600s. The island's dry soil made the oranges grow stunted and bitter, useless as food, but their peel turned out to be extraordinarily fragrant. The Senior family has been distilling the liqueur from this accidental discovery since 1896.
