Queen Emma Bridge

The Queen Emma Bridge is a floating pontoon bridge that connects Punda and Otrobanda across the Sint Annabaai. When a ship needs to pass through the harbour — which happens several times a day — the bridge swings open on its hinge, pivoting out of the way like a giant door, and a free ferry takes pedestrians across instead. Watching the operation is unexpectedly satisfying.

The bridge is pedestrian-only and takes about three minutes to cross. The views from the middle, with the Handelskade facades to one side and the open Caribbean on the other, are excellent. Cross it at least once in each direction.

A story
The bridge was built in 1888 and originally charged a toll of two cents for anyone wearing shoes — those without shoes crossed for free. The Dutch merchant Leonard Burlington Smith financed and designed it. The current bridge, rebuilt in 1939, still swings on a pontoon mechanism that has changed little in concept from the original.
